Eigengrau

“Eigengrau” is a poetry of residual light: what remains visible when ordinary illumination has failed. In her debut collection, Eleonora Levi Giordani moves through a landscape where perception is never passive and language never merely descriptive. Music, literature, philosophy, cinema, memory, religion, and the body continually cross one another: T. S. Eliot and Tori Amos, Bob Dylan and Rubin Carter, the Beatles and Wagner, Freud and Heidegger, Leopardi, Pascoli, Ungaretti, Sappho, Schiele, Kim Ki-duk, and the visual memory of the twentieth century all enter a poetry at once intimate and fiercely cultured. Yet these references never become ornament. They are transformed into matter: light becomes wound, sound becomes flesh, the body becomes geometry, and darkness itself acquires color. The German word “Eigengrau” names the gray perceived by the human eye in complete darkness. In Levi Giordani’s poetry, it becomes the image of a consciousness that continues to see when the world goes dark. A restless, erudite, sensual debut, “Eigengrau” explores the point at which vision becomes memory, memory becomes language, and language begins to illuminate from within.
